PCBs are one of the most fundamental components of modern electronics, so they must be precisely produced and properly packaged to deliver expected performance and service life. Packaging is a key step that ties together quality, shipping safety, and customer experience.
1. Two-tier packaging
PCB packaging is generally split into inner and outer packaging:
- Inner packaging — plastic bags, foam trays, corrugated cardboard, etc. Protects boards against scratches, impacts, and static.
- Outer packaging — usually cardboard cartons that hold multiple inner units, making the package stable and safe.
2. Precautions
- Packaging materials must meet relevant standards: durable, environmentally responsible, and cost-effective.
- Inner packaging quantity must match the carton's load capacity. Foam should be placed around the board to prevent transit collisions from squeezing or deforming the carton; on impact, the foam absorbs the shock and protects the substrate.
- Outer packaging must offer enough cushioning. There is also a stacking-height limit — boards must not be piled too high. Cross-border shipping involves multiple handling steps, so cartons must be reinforced and labeled to arrive intact.
- Packaging must include moisture-proof and anti-static treatment so that humidity or ESD does not damage internal components in storage or transit.
- Packaging must be clearly labeled with model, production date, manufacturer, and usage notes for easy identification and counting.
3. Benefits of good packaging
- Better protection for the customer — protects PCB quality and lifespan.
- Higher shipping efficiency and safety — fewer losses and repair costs.
- Standardization reduces handling complexity and operator error, improving throughput and quality.
